About Harvard Club Sports

Club sports are formed by groups of undergraduates who share a common interest in recreation and sport, together organizing and collectively pursuing their chosen activities. It offers the opportunity for participants to engage in and derive the pleasures and benefits of athletic and/or recreational activities. It is a student-initiated activity that relies on the students to be responsible for leadership, decision-making, organization, and supervision of all club actions. Clubs are organized on instruction, recreational, and competitive levels and their activities range from informal play and practice to intercollegiate and tournament competition. Club sports are open to those with Harvard University affiliation including: Harvard College full-time undergraduate students, Harvard graduate students, Harvard Extension School students, Harvard faculty/staff, Faculty Deans and tutors, and the spouses/partners of these affiliates. Non-undergraduates may be restricted from some intercollegiate competition in certain sports due to association or league rules.

The purpose of Harvard University Club Sports is to offer sporting and competitive activity for any interested affiliate of Harvard University who has the desire to participate, to develop skills in specific sports or activities, and to provide an opportunity for extramural competition. Club sports foster the development of sound leisure values and a feeling of belonging and understanding between individuals and groups.

The Department of Athletics provides guidance, facility space, and an administrative framework for the operation of officially recognized club sports. The club sport program has social, instructional, competitive, recreational and service functions. It offers the opportunity for participants to engage in and derive the pleasures and benefits of athletic and/or recreational activities.

Mission

The Department of Harvard Athletics & Recreation is committed to offering a wide variety of activities that meet students' competitive, recreational, educational, and social needs at Harvard University.

Club Sports have been established to foster positive and healthy experiences through participation in recreational and competitive activities. This mission will be achieved by:

  • Providing opportunities to learn new skills, games and activities
  • Offering activities that explore, and push, one's limits while providing stress management opportunities
  • Supporting activities that promote social interaction within the diverse community at Harvard University
  • Providing opportunities that examine, and challenge, the values and life choices of students
  • Offering competitive and recreational settings that facilitate individual and team development
