  • Our Story

The Harvard women's club hockey team was nearly wiped out during the pandemic. When we were sent home in the Spring of 2020, we had a dozen rostered players. We returned to campus in the Fall of 2021 with 1 undergraduate student.

Luckily, hockey players started coming out of the woodwork. Not only were experienced players looking for a team, but in the 2021-2022 school year alone, more than 20 students with no prior hockey experience wanted to play hockey. We couldn't ignore this demand.

  • New Opportunities

Students from all sorts of backgrounds have reached out to us, asking to play hockey. Some are figure skaters, field hockey players, or speed skaters. Some have no athletic experience at all. Others are from countries where ice hardly exists. But they all want to play hockey.

We scrounged up as much gear as we could from family members, old teammates, and donation bins. We ended up with 2-3 sets of equipment to loan out to new players. Since we started in 2021, we have introduced hockey to over 10 students. Our experienced players give them skating, stick-handling, and shooting tips during practices.

  • A Growing Team

New-to-hockey players are only part of the story. In part because we are so open to new players, we've created a culture that is welcoming and light-hearted. The bulk of our roster is women who simply want to play hockey because they love the sport and team environments.

Part of loving the sport is loving the competition. We are hoping to move up within our league so we can have intense games and more opportunities to play. To do this, however, we'll need a coach whose values align with our culture, and regular financial support to cover league fees and the costs of a busier schedule.

  • How You Can Help

You can support our team by donating to our Friend's of Harvard Account. Under the "Select a Fund*" dropdown, select "Ice Hockey Club (Women)." Whether your gift is $5 or $5000, it all adds up to help us achieve our goals. We'll use these funds to cover things like referees, travel, equipment, and, (hopefully soon) league fees.

We are also looking for gear donations. If you, your friends, or family have old gear they're looking to get rid of, we can use it! Gear will go towards new players who have always wanted a chance to play hockey but couldn't afford it themselves.

If neither of these options are for you but you'd like to support us, your commitment is still valuable. Come watch our games and cheer us on!

Julia is a field hockey player from the Netherlands. Since joining our team and learning to skate, she's become one of our leading goal-scorers.

We started the 2021-2022 season with 4 players. By March 2022, we had over 26 rostered skaters. Five of them were completely new to ice hockey.
